Well another week of life has gone and rolled by … it amazes me that as we get older time just seems to go by faster and faster. It’s not that time is any different than when we were kids; it’s just that our lives get busier and busier, hence we don’t have as much of it to relax and take care of ourselves.
I meet a little girl once who told me she was going to a new school; it was a Waldorf school. I asked her what she liked most about it and she said “snacks and playing” with a twinkle in her eye. Man what a life I thought… and then I remembered a not too distant past (30 years ain’t that long ago, right?) when my life was all about snacks and playing
After this little girl hit me over the head with her wake up hammer I had a mini Satori (light bulb moment) … I was reminded of the importance of keeping the balance between body, mind and spirit in my life. I remembered the direct relationship between this balance and my health. When out of sync everything in my life is harder and my stress level is always higher, which leads to a host of ailments, as we all know.
I’ve always made great efforts to take care of myself, but this little girl made me realize how the ‘busy-ness’ of life keeps sneaking up on us … it flies under our time management radar … and bam, the next thing you know there’s no time left for snacks and playing!! After this mini Satori I re-vowed to myself that I would MAKE that extra time to take even better care of myself.
At first I could hear a voice in my head saying “it’s selfish to take a break from your hectic schedule” and another voice saying “you should feel guilty for working out so much … others don’t make the time for this so why should you”. Then it hit me, “the heck with all of those voices!!”, they are all egoic distractions trying to prevent me for experiencing my life to the fullest. What I saw is that if we don’t take that NECESSARY time to find our mind-body-spirit balance then everyone in our lives gets less of our joy and more of our stress. Now that’s not fair to anyone, is it?
Since my meeting with this little teacher I see my life differently (never underestimate the profound insights available to you from innocent children). Her playful innocence has provoked me to take much better care of myself. I am working out consistently, eating really well, enjoying more meditation and taking the time to rest when I need to. Over all I feel grounded, stronger, less stressed, more productive and happier.
So please, I urge you to do the same and MAKE that commitment to yourself. TAKE the time to cultivate your health and your inner peace; be consistent with your exercise program, eat well, de-stress and remember to have a ’snacks and playing’ attitude in everything that you do.

What a beautiful reminder to have snacks and take time out to play.
I do have lots of snacks, but don’t take near enough time out to play. Though working in my garden and mowing my lawn is play to me. Instant gratification!
I vow to play more, though. It is a promise to myself.
Thank you Sensei,
Dana
